Biography

After injury cruelled much of her junior career, Rebecca Allen has emerged as one of the most exciting talents in Australian women’s basketball after a breakout 2013/14 Wattle Valley WNBL season.

“Spida” became one of the emerging stars of the Melbourne Boomers, averaging more than 13 points and six rebounds per game on her way to claiming the Robyn Maher WNBL Defensive Player of the Year.

Two shoulder reconstructions as a teenager saw Allen spend much of her time at the AIS in the treatment and rehab facilities, but it was this time away from the court that drove the Nunawading junior to make every post a winner.

Her form in the WNBL caught the eye of Jayco Australian Opals Head Coach Brendan Joyce, with the 21-year-old invited to her first senior national team camp in January of 2014 and later that year, she won a bronze medal with the Opals at the World Cup.

That led her to grab an opportunity with the New York Liberty in the WNBA and while a knee injury interrupted her first season, she has become a solid member of the team off the bench over the past three years.

Allen returned to the Chemist Warehouse Australian Opals side in 2018 ahead of the FIBA World Cup in Spain. At the championships, Allen registered 8.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game as the Opals secured the Silver medal.
