Rollers and Gliders drawn in strong groups for Tokyo 2020

With a little over 100 days to go, Australia’s men’s and women’s Wheelchair Basketball teams now know who they will meet in the preliminary stage of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Both the Gliders and Rollers will face stern opposition during the group stage of the tournament, following the official draw which was conducted by the IBWF on Wednesday 12 May at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, England.

Australia’s women’s team were drawn in Group A which also features Canada, Germany, Great Britain and Japan. While Group B of the women’s event sees the reigning Paralympic Champions USA drawn against World Champions the Netherlands and Zonal Champions China and Algeria plus Spain.

For the men’s competition, the draw saw the top four finishers from the World Championships in 2018 drawn in Group B – Australia, Great Britain, USA and Iran – and they will be joined by Germany and Algeria.

Japan, as host nation, opted be placed in Group A along with Canada, Korea, Spain, Turkey, and Colombia.

The groups now set out the preliminary stage for Tokyo 2020, which is played in a round robin format, with the top four in each group progressing to the quarter-finals, followed by semi-finals, and finals.

The Wheelchair Basketball competition at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will take place between August 25 – September 5, 2021. View the schedule HERE.
