MIXED RESULTS FOR ROLLERS AND GLIDERS ON OPENING DAY OF AOZ QUALIFIERS

The Australian Gliders will rue a slow start against China while the Rollers dealt with Iraq easily on the opening day of competition at the 2017 IWBF AOZ Qualifiers.

Australian Gliders

Sticking with the host nation through most of the first quarter, a late surge from China opened up a four-point lead and by half-time, they had extended that margin to double-digits.

Struggling to find the bottom of the basket, those issues continued into the third term for Australia but China had their most productive term, scoring 17 points to push out to an unassailable 19-point lead.

However, the Gliders did not give in as Cobi Crispin and Amber Merritt began to do some damage while Shelley Chaplin (two points, three rebounds, one assist) chimed in as well.

Merritt connected from distance on a three-pointer to finish with 11 points and Crispin tallied a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Gliders matched their score tally to that stage with a 22-point quarter.

The deficit proved too much to overcome though with China finishing the game shooting 44%, winning 53-44.

There were positive signs for Australia with Georgia Inglis combining eight points with six rebounds while Sarah Vinci and Ella Sabljak showcased some strong defensive efforts.

With all four teams in the women's competition advancing to the Semi-Finals, the Gliders can continue to fine-tune their game with two more games against Japan and Iran in the pool stage.

Australian Rollers

Never giving Iraq a chance in their opening game, the Rollers began the contest with a 34-1 run, putting the game beyond doubt before quarter-time.

They went on to win every term, leading 70-8 at the main break before their offence dried up somewhat in the second half to finish with a 107-23 win.

Ten players hit the scoreboard for Australia, paced by Michael Auprince's 21 on 10-13 shooting while Bill Latham (18 points), Shaun Norris (16 points, six assists), Tristan Knowles (13 points, four assists) and Tom O'Neill-Thorne (ten points) all notched double-figures as well.

They shot 46-62 (74%) as a team from the field and 9-9 from the free-throw line in a clinical offensive display while at the other end of the floor, kept Iraq to just 21 shot attempts.
