AUSSIE WOMEN DEFEAT CANADA IN FIRST GAME OF USA TOUR

A scintillating opening quarter from Australia has proven enough to beat Canada in their first game of their USA tour, the final preparation before Rio.

A 29-13 first term set up the win although Canada never gave in, trimming the margin to four points in the final period to send a scare through the Australian camp.

Elizabeth Cambage was the catalyst for the hot start, scoring eight quick points as the Aussies began the game on 7-10 shooting from the field to open up a 16-point advantage by the first break.

26 turnovers proved an issue for them though and it allowed Canada to slowly claw their way back into the contest before a 14-2 run to start the final quarter gave the opposition all the momentum.

However, a three-point play from Leilani Mitchell righted the ship for Australia before a lay-up from Cambage on a feed from Erin Phillips helped wrestle back the ascendancy and end any hope of a Canadian comeback.

Shooting 58% as a team and 6-13 from beyond the arc, every Aussie received court-time while eight players hit the scoreboard.

Coming back from a hip injury, Penny Taylor top-scored with 19 points at 67% including an 11-point barrage in the third period.

Cambage (16 points, five rebounds), Phillips (12 points, five rebounds) and Mitchell (12 points, six boards and four assists) joined Taylor in double-figures while Marianna Tolo chimed in with eight points off the bench.

Australia's defence was also impressive, holding their opposition to 37% shooting overall while they out-rebounded Canada by ten.
