SAPPHIRES CRUSH MEXICO IN U17 WORLD CHAMPS OPENER

The Australian Sapphires have used their front court advantage to defeat Mexico, 98-38, in their first game of the FIBA Under-17 World Championships in Spain.

Finishing with a +28 differential in rebounds and +8 differential in offensive rebounds, the Sapphires utilised their height and strength in the paint to run out comfortable winners after they started the game with a 6-0 run.

The match truly blew open in the second term when Australia went on a 16-0 run to open up a 45-15 advantage by the main break.

The second half was much the same story with the Sapphires not letting their foot off the pedal, extending their lead at every change while shooting 54% as a team and holding Mexico to 24% from the field.

In a pleasing result for coach Shannon Seebohm, every Australian player hit the scoreboard with no member of the side having to play over 24 minutes.

Monique Conti paced the side with 14 points and six assists off the bench while Ezi Magbegor (12 points, eight rebounds, one steal, one block) and Jasmine Simmons (seven points, three assists, three steals and three blocks) were exceptional at both ends of the floor.

Miela Goodchild (ten points) and Samantha Simons (ten points) both enjoyed successful nights as well with Simons hitting 2-4 from the three-point line.
