OPALS UNABLE TO CAPITALISE ON STRONG START IN LOSS TO CANADA

The Jayco Australian Opals have been unable to capitalise on an 18-10 opening term, falling to Canada 60-72 in their penultimate game of their European tour.

Australia's hard-nosed defence held their opponents to just 3-12 shooting in the first quarter while Katie-Rae Ebzery and Steph Talbot both drilled three-pointers at the offensive end.

Canada were able to respond in the second term, answering with a 20-10 run of their run to gain the lead at half-time before that margin reached as much as 15 points in the final term.

The Opals were held to 37% shooting for the game and while coach Brendan Joyce stuck to the game-plan of sharing the minutes around his whole team, they struggled to find consistency as they gifted Canada 22 points off 22 turnovers.

"Credit to Canada they played hard for the win," said Joyce.

"The positives are they exposed areas we need to address... and we must continue to learn and improve.

"We rotated our roster but struggled to find an effective combination after a great start. We had too many players down tonight but it provides a great challenge to see who will step up and deliver against the home team France for our final tour game tomorrow night."

Tallying 13 points on 5-7 shooting, Suzy Batkovic impressed off the bench while Liz Cambage was again the top-scorer with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Tess Madgen hit both of her three-pointers in 17 minutes of court time while Leilani Mitchell atoned for a poor shooting night to accrue nine of Australia's 17 assists.
