OPALS TO PLAY AT MSG IN FINAL PREPARATION BEFORE BRAZIL

The Jayco Australian Opals will head to the USA for an exhibition tournament from July 28-August 1 in their final preparation before heading to Brazil.

They will face the number one women’s ranked team in the world in the USA, the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship gold medallists Canada and 2012 silver medallists France in a four-team, three-stop tournament across Newark Delaware, Bridgeport Connecticut and New York City.

“I think each of these games will be competitive and be a really good preview of what you’ll see in August,” said USA head coach Geno Auriemma.

Basketball Australia CEO, Anthony Moore, was equally enthusiastic about the opportunity.

“Following two successful tours of Japan and Europe in the past few months, this is an excellent chance for the Opals to once again test themselves against the best competition in the world,” he said.

“While the tour is the final preparation for our Jayco Opals, it represents an historic moment for Australian basketball to play at Madison Square Garden, arguably the most famous basketball stadium in the world.

"The Jayco Opals have medalled at the past five tournaments and this tour represents another opportunity for our world class female athletes to showcase their talents in the biggest basketball market on the planet.”

Australia’s full schedule for the tournament can be found below with a team to be selected by head coach Brendan Joyce and the Opals staff in the coming weeks.

July 28: Australia v Canada at 7am in Delaware
