EMERGING BOOMERS SET TO TOUR CHINA

Basketball Australia will send an Emerging Boomers team to China in June-July for two tournaments designed to give the players some valuable international experience as they advance through the national pathway.

Nanning, China will be the location for the first tournament from June 25-27 before they head to Shenyang from July 1-3.

Led by Australian Boomers head coach Andrej Lemanis, the Emerging Boomers will face international competition in Serbia and Cameroon while two teams from the Chinese Basketball Association, including the Liaoning Flying Leopards, will also compete.

“Post-Rio, the next four-year cycle will require the Boomers to compete in the Asian Cup qualifiers, a 16 nation format with six home and six away games,” said Basketball Australia High Performance Manager Jan Stirling.

“NBA players will not be available so it imperative our Emerging Boomer talent is fast-tracked.

“This tour of China will give the athletes selected the chance to test themselves for those qualification tournaments in the lead up to Worlds and Tokyo in 2017 and beyond.

“Coach Andrej Lemanis is excited at the opportunity to expose these emerging Boomers to this level of international competition and assess their ability to succeed.”

Two scholarship holders with the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence in Will Magnay and Matthew Kenyon will tour China while three college stars in Jordan Hunter, Harrison Froling and Xavier Cooks will join them.

Rounding out the team will be three NBL representatives in Jason Cadee, Mitch Norton and Todd Blanchfield as well as free agent Clint Steindl.

“The players will be embracing this opportunity as a chance to demonstrate how they can excel in the benchmark events of future Worlds and Olympics,” said Stirling.
