The final selections for the squads were a result of performances at the Under 18 Australian Junior Championships and at the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence Australian Development Camp as well as in consultation with High Performance Managers at each State Association.
The selected athletes in each of the Australian Under 17 Men’s squad (16 athletes) and the Jayco Australian Under 17 women’s squad (18 athletes) will head into camp in the upcoming weeks at the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence at the AIS.
After the camps, 12 athletes from each squad will be selected in the final teams to head to China on a tour, and then to Zaragoza in Spain for the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championships, between 22 June – 3 July 2016.
The Head coach of the men’s Australian Under 17 squad, Mark Watkins said “I am very excited about the camp this weekend and selecting the team.”
“This will be a young group who will play an exciting style of play up the floor & use their energy & effort to disrupt the opposition.”
“There will be plenty of depth in each position and players can be moved around if need be.”
“From what I saw at U18 Nationals this group will play very hard and have many leaders who will lead in different ways.”
The Jayco Australian Under 17 women’s squad will be coached by Shannon Seebohm. Seebohm commented that ”I am really excited about the group we have put together, we have selected a very athletic & talented squad and I am sure the selection camp is going to be extremely competitive.”
“We want to play an aggressive style of basketball on both ends of the floor and I am confident that this group can do that at a high level.”
General Manager of High Performance at Basketball Australia, Jan Stirling said “the high quality of athletes that have been named in the squads point to a successful tournament in Spain and a big future for Australia Basketball.”
