ONE YEAR TO GO UNTIL THE 2016 PARALYMPICS

The countdown has begun for the 2016 Summer Paralympics with today marking one year until the Games begin.

Held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from September 7-18, Australia are hoping to be represented by the men’s national team, the Rollers, as well as the women’s national team, the Gliders.

However, before they advance to Rio, both teams must qualify at the 2015 IWBF AOZ tournament next month with three countries advancing in the men’s competition while just one country will qualify in the women’s.

If they do reach the Paralympics, Australia will be looking to continue a long history of success which began in 1996 when the Rollers won the gold medal.

Australia has since reached the podium at every tournament, with the women winning a silver medal in 2000 on home soil before both the men and women earned silver medals in 2004.

2008 saw a return to first place for the Rollers while the Gliders won a bronze medal and at the last Paralympics, the men and women both finished in second place once again.

The Rollers and Gliders would enter the 2016 Paralympics with recent success as well with the Under-25 women World Championship team finishing second earlier this year while the men are back-to-back World Champions.
