Dominant Airbnb Boomers cruise past Finland

The Airbnb Australian Boomers made it four consecutive wins on their tour of Europe, posting a commanding 80-57 win over Finland in Strasbourg, France this morning.

Coming off a clean-sweep of the Nice tournament, the refreshed Airbnb Boomers went on a 19-6 run to close out the first half, blowing away their opponents and setting up what would be a comfortable 23-point victory.

After six games in two weeks, including three wins in three days against Ukraine, Philippines and France in Nice, the players and staff enjoyed a mid-tour break, reconvening in Strasbourg on Thursday for the final two games.

On his return to Strasbourg, where he played last season in the French ProA League, David Andersen led a dominant Australian frontcourt, posting 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The three-time Olympian found plenty of support from his big man brethren, with Aron Baynes continuing his stellar form on 13 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Cameron Bairstow adding 11 points.

The hot hand of Ryan Broekhoff didn’t cool off during the three-day mid-tour break, returning to post 14 points on 5-of-6 from the field, while Joe Ingles had nine points and four assists.

Retaining his spot in the starting five, Broekhoff was quick to find his range, dropping a three-pointer to opening the scoring as the Airbnb Boomers went on a 9-0 run to lead 15-6 late in the first quarter.

Finland rallied to cut the deficit to just two points, holding firm in the early stages of the second quarter, before the Airbnb Boomers blew the game open as Brock Motum (seven points and four rebounds) and Chris Goulding (six points) provided the scoring punch off the bench.

The Australians turned a 21-18 advantage into a comfortable 16-point half time lead thanks largely to a 19-6 run to close out the half, matching efficient offensive play with high pressure defence.

From this point the Finns were at the mercy of Baynes and Andersen as the duo worked seamlessly in tandem to stretch the lead to as many as 25 points in the third quarter.

Finland would rally late on a 10-1 run and cut the Australian advantage to just seven points early in the final quarter before Bairstow posted nine fourth-quarter points to ensure the margin would reflect his team’s dominance.

The Airbnb Boomers round out their European preparation against France in the early hours of Monday morning against France before making their way to Gran Canaria ahead of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
