New Aussie Hoops program launched

Basketball Australia is pleased to launch the new and improved Aussie Hoops program, helping youngsters around the country enjoy basketball – everyone’s game.

Aussie Hoops is Basketball Australia’s official junior game development program for children aged 5–10 years.

Aussie Hoops enables participants of all abilities the opportunity to learn basketball in a structured, inclusive and safe environment, developing physical fitness, social skills and an understanding of the sport while having fun.

In a major coup, two of Australian basketball’s biggest names have jumped on board in support of the new Aussie Hoops program.

Jayco Australian Opals legend Lauren Jackson and Australian Boomers star Patty Mills will be the official Aussie Hoops Ambassadors, helping to spread the word of basketball around the country.

Jackson, a four-time Olympian with the Jayco Opals, said Aussie Hoops is all about having fun playing basketball.

“Playing basketball has been such a big part of my life and to have a program like Aussie Hoops to make learning the skills of the game fun is great for these budding Opals and Boomers,” Jackson said.

Currently playing for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA playoffs, Mills said Aussie Hoops is a great way to learn about basketball in a fun and friendly environment.

“Basketball is about having fun, being active and learning new skills, while making new friends – and Aussie Hoops is the best way to do that,” Mills said.

Jackson and Mills are the stars of the new Aussie Hoops television commercial, which can be viewed here.

Global sporting apparel brand Peak Sports have thrown their support behind the exciting new program as an inaugural Aussie Hoops sponsor and exclusive footwear partner.

The new Aussie Hoops program was launched at half-time of Game Two of the 2014 Sino-Australia Challenge between the Australian Boomers and China at Challenge Stadium in Perth.

The Aussie Hoops program will be delivered in each school term, delivered by nationally accredited coaches, with a focus on participation and inclusiveness. The program is to be rolled out at the start of term three, July 2014.
