Squad named for final Under 17 Women's CoE camp

It comes down to four days at the Basketball Australia National Centre of Excellence (CoE), with 12 spots up for grabs in the Jayco Australian Under 17 Women’s team to compete at next month’s 2014 FIBA Under 17 World Championship for Women.

Head Coach Chris Lucas has called-up a 17-player squad for the final training camp (22-25 May) from which the final team will be selected to represent Australia in the Czech Republic.

It has been a busy period for Lucas and his aspiring young players, with the team returning from China last week after a hectic nine-game schedule against Under 19 teams from China and Slovenia as well as a team from the USA, returning home with an impressive 5-4 record.

The 17-strong squad will arrive in Canberra on Thursday, hoping to impress Lucas and his coaching staff for the final time before they reduce the attendees to 12 – the final team that will compete against the world’s best at the Under 17 level.

Many stars who played a key role in securing passage to the World Championships by sweeping New Zealand in last year’s FIBA Oceania Under 17 Championships in Melbourne are again in camp.

The 2014 FIBA Under 17 World Championship for Women will be held in the cities of Klatovy and Plzen in the Czech Republic from 28 June to 6 July.

The Australian team will face Mexico, Slovakia and Japan in their group stage fixtures, looking to advance to the knockout rounds.
