Boomers star Joe Ingles wins Euroleague title

At the third time of trying, Australian Boomers star Joe Ingles has finally broken through to claim his first Euroleague championship, as his Maccabi Tel-Aviv claimed a dramatic 98-86 overtime win against Real Madrid in the final in the early hours of this morning.

Milan, Italy would be the stage for a memorable final for the 2014 Euroleague campaign, with the all-conquering Real Madrid hoping to bring the title back to Spain for the first time since 2010.

They faced Ingles and his Israeli team, sporting unmatched European experience, with the club competing in their sixth Euroleague Final in the past 11 seasons.

This big-game experience shone through in overtime after the game finished tied at 73-73 at the end of regulation. Maccabi Tel-Aviv comprehensively outscored their opponents 25-13 to claim the club’s first Euroleague crown since 2005.

The win saw Maccabi Tel-Aviv add a sixth Euroleague title to their collection – the fourth championship victory since 2001. Only Greek giants Panathinaikos have won more European trophies in the past 15 years.

Competing in his third consecutive Euroleague Final Four, Ingles was finally able to reach the final after Maccabi Tel-Aviv accounted for Russian giants CSKA Moscow in their semi-final 68-67 on Saturday to setup a clash with the winner of the all-Spanish semi-final between Madrid and their bitter rivals (and Ingles’ former club) Barcelona.

After three seasons with Barcelona, Ingles made the jump to join the Maccabi Tel-Aviv during the off-season in search of more court time and further team success. He has found both, with the Euroleague title adding to his Israeli Cup win earlier this season.

Ingles joins an illustrious list of Australian Boomers who have achieved the ultimate in European club basketball, including current teammate David Andersen – a three-time Euroleague champion.

Focus now turns to domestic duties for Ingles and his teammates, with the Israeli Superleague playoffs in full swing. Maccabi Tel-Aviv face Hapoel Eilat in the seim-finals, hoping to advance and setup a potential treble.
