Aussies Abroad: Mixed fortunes for Opals in China

There were mixed fortunes for Jayco Australian Opals duo Liz Cambage and Lauren Jackson in Women’s Chinese Basketball Association Round 15 action, but both still posted impressive numbers as the countdown to the WCBA finals continues.

For Jackson it was another victorious round, with her Heilongjiang team recording their third-consecutive win, 81-78 over Jiangsu on Tuesday night. The Opals star continued her recent run of good form, posting 28 points (11-of-18 FG) and 6 rebounds.

The numbers were equally as impressive for fellow Opal Cambage, but the result was not, as her Beijing team went down 77-67 to Shanghai. The 2012 London Olympic bronze medallist, posted 27 points (10-of-14 FG), 5 rebounds and 4 blocks in just the third defeat her team has suffered this season.

It was the end of a gruelling NBA road trip for the Andrew Bogut and his Golden State Warriors, going down to the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday 102-98, bringing an end to their 10-game winning streak.

Bogut had 10 points (5-of-7 FG), 9 rebounds and 2 blocks in 31 minutes after posting 8 points and 12 rebounds in 24 minutes during the 101-80 defeat of Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Fellow Australian Boomer Matthew Dellavedova played 31 minutes as the Cleveland Cavaliers recorded a rare win, defeating the Philadelphia 76ers 111-93 on Wednesday. Dellavedova posted 2 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists, tying a career-high for assists.

The San Antonio Spurs train continues to roll on, with Patty Mills again providing scoring punch off the bench, dropping 11 points in 19 minutes as the Spurs made light work of Texas rivals, the Dallas Mavericks, 112-90 on Thursday.

It was a Boomer v Boomer match-up in Euroleague Top 16 action on Friday morning as Joe Ingles and his Maccabi Tel-Aviv team bettered Aleks Maric’s Lokomotiv Kuban 85-75. It was a quiet night for Maric, while Ingles posted 7 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists in 15 minutes.

The Boomers duo had mixed result in their domestic duties, with Ingles posting 9 points and 5 assists as Maccabi Tel-Aviv defeat Maccabi Haifa 79-71 in Israeli league action, while Maric had 12 points and 6 rebounds as Kuban went down 109-86 to Enisey in VTB League competition.

Saint Mary’s Aussie duo Matt Hodgson and Dane Pineau enjoyed extended court time as the Gaels easily accounted for William Jessup 84-46 on Tuesday. Earning his first start of the season, Hodgson posted 3 points and 8 rebounds in 15 minutes, while Pineau had 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in a season-high 23 minutes.

Overtime joy and heartbreak was felt by Aussies in NCAA college basketball, with the New Mexico Lobos defeated Wyoming 72-69, Albany needing two extra periods to account for UMBC 73-72, while Washington State went down 71-70 to Colorado.

Cameron Bairstow (15 points and 4 rebounds in 38 minutes) and Hugh Greenwood (5 points, 6rebounds and 2 steals in 33 minutes) led the way for the Lobos, while Peter Hooley (27 points on 5-of-10 3FG and 6 rebounds in 47 minutes) and Sam Rowley (20 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals in 43 minutes) were the heroes for Albany.

Despite a season-high 24 points (6-of-8 3FG) in 42 minutes from Dexter Kernich-Drew, the Washington State Cougars could not pull off the upset of the 16th ranked Colorado team.

A team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds from Anthony Drmic led a second-half rally, but it wasn’t enough as Boise State fell 69-66 to 15th ranked San Diego State on Wednesday. Freshman Nick Duncan impressed with 6 points and 5 rebounds for the Broncos.

It was a third consecutive double-double for Majok Majok as the Ball State Cardinals fell 72-68 to Akron, with the Australian centre posting 16 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks in 35 minutes.

Jordan Vandenberg helped North Carolina State to their first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season, posting 4 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks as the Wolfpack defeated Notre Dame77-70 on Wednesday.

Eastern Washington got back to winning ways, defeating Montana 69-62 on Friday. Australian forward Venky Jois enjoyed a standout game, posting 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in the 7-point win.

Fresno State made light work of Air Force in women’s NCAA action, with Alex Sheedy the star for the Bulldogs, posting a game-high 17 points to go with 10 rebounds and 4 assists.
