Aussies Abroad: Jackson, Cambage dominate in China

Jayco Australian Opals pair Lauren Jackson and Liz Cambage continue to post extraordinary numbers in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA), combining for a remarkable 79 points in Round 9 of the regular season.

In Tuesday’s 86-81 win over Guangdong, Jackson was unstoppable, posting 34 points (10-of-17FG and 13-of-14FT), 14 rebounds and 3 blocks for Heilongjiang. Cambage was equally as impressive for Beijing in their 93-83 loss to Shanxi, finishing the game with 45 points on 18-of-23 shooting and 8 rebounds.

The pair have been standouts in the WCBA this season, with Jackson’s team improving to fourth on the ladder (6-3), while Cambage’s team hods third place (7-2).

In what is expected to be an exciting battle, the two Aussie stars will go head-to-head on Saturday night when Cambage’s Beijing host Jackson’s Heilongjiang.

Australian Boomers star Joe Ingles and his Maccabi Tel-Aviv team have advanced to the next phase of the Euroleague season, finishing top of Group D on the back of a convincing 68-55 win over Panathinaikos on Friday morning.

Ingles had 10 points and 3 assists in 27 minutes to help ensure his team would go into the Top 16 phase of the competition as a number one seed. This phase of the tournament will see Ingles and his team play a total of 14 games against seven other teams in their group, starting in early January.

Fellow Boomer Aleks Maric and his Lokomotiv Kuban team are set to join Ingles in the Top 16, with the Russian team expected to finish second in Group D, with their final game of the regular season phase against Laboral Kutxa on Saturday morning.

Maric goes into the Euroleague clash in good form after posting 10 points and 5 rebounds in 19 minutes as Lokomotiv Kuban defeated KS Turow Zgorzelec 73-65 in VTB League competition on Tuesday.

Australian Boomers sharp-shooter Ryan Broekhoff has advanced to the Last 32 phase of the Eurocup competition, with his Besiktas team finishing top of Group H after defeating Radnicki Kragujevac in the final game of the opening phase 90-76 on Thursday.

Jayco Australian Opals star Marianna Tolo had 10 points and 4 rebounds in 23 minutes as her French team Bourges Basket claimed a comfortable 77-61 win over Good Angels Kosiece in Women’s Euroleague action.

Australian youngster Mangok Mathiang had another impressive game for #6 Louisville as they cruised to a 90-60 win over Missouri State in NCAA men’s college basketball action on Wednesday.

The freshman forward/centre had 8 points and 9 rebounds in 20 minutes as a starter for the Cardinals, who improve their record to 10-1.

North Carolina State and their Aussie centre Jordan Vandenberg improved their record to 8-2 after holding off Tennesse 65-58 on Thursday. Vandenberg had 4 blocks in 12 minutes in the victory.

Despite another monster game from Australian Boomers star Cameron Bairstow, the New Mexico Lobos suffered their third loss of the college basketball season, going down to in-state rivals New Mexico State 67-61 on Wednesday.

Bairstow had his fourth consecutive 20-plus point game, dropping a game-high 25 points (9-of-14FG and 7-of-9FT) and 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks in 33 minutes.

The 23-year-old has sky-rocketed up the scoring standings in college basketball, ranking 29th in the NCAA at 20.7 points per game.

A dominant performance by Australian centre Angus Brandt has inspired Oregon State to a 76-67 win over Towson on Thursday, improving the Beavers record to 6-2.

Brandt was unstoppable, posting a game-high 27 points on 10-of-15 from the field to go with 6 rebounds in 33 minutes.

Boomers star Patty Mills stepped up to the plate in the absence of starter Tony Parker, playing a season-high 31 minutes in the San Antonio Spurs 108-101 win over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday.

Mills came off the bench to post 12 points, 4 assists and 2 steals as the Spurs improve their record to 20-5.
