Aussies Abroad: Gaze fires for SMC as Maric comes up big

Australian collegiate star Kate Gaze had a weekend to remember, leading her Saint Mary’s College to victory at the SMC Thanksgiving Classic, posting a near triple-double in the Saturday’s win over Alabama.

The point guard had a state line to remember, posting 10 points, 12 assists and 8 rebounds in the 86-76 win, guiding her team to a high-scoring win. This performance was followed up by 12 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds in the thumping of Toledo 81-57 on Sunday. The two wins improve the Gaels record to 7-0.

In Europe it was a statement performance from Australian Boomers big man Aleks Maric that inspired his Lokomotiv Kuban to an 85-72 win over CEZ Nymburk in VTB league action.

Starting at centre, Maric was at his dominant best, posting 15 points and 9 rebounds in 21 minutes as his Russian outfit improved their record to 5-2 in the standings.

Brad Newley’s Gran Canaria slipped to a third consecutive defeat, despite 10 points and 5 assists from the two-time Olympian, going down 74-70 to high-flying Valencia. Fellow Boomer Joe Ingles had 8 points and 5 assists as Maccabi Tel-Aviv went down 87-85 to Hapoel J-M in the Israeli Superleague action.

A 21-point outing from Daniel Kickert could not inspire Azovmash to a victory over his former club Budivelnyk, going down 82-65 in Ukrainian league competition.

Jayco Australian Opals star Belinda Snell had 13 points and 6 rebounds as CCC Polkowice stayed second in the Polish BLK league standings, defeating Riviera Gydna 88-43.

Fellow Opal Cayla Francis had another big game for French team Nantes, dropping 16 points and 8 rebounds as the struggling team recorded just their fourth win of the season, 71-56 over Tarbes.

Andrew Bogut is back to his defensively dominant best for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA, putting in two impressive performances over the weekend. In Saturday’s loss to Oklahoma City, Bogut had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks before posting 6 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks in the win over Sacramento on Monday.

The minutes keep piling up for Patty Mills, playing 23 in San Antonio’s 109-91 win over Orlando on Saturday, posting 8 points and 2 assists, while Matthew Dellavedova had 7 points (2-of-2 3FG) for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the win over Boston.

College gun Venky Jois was at it again for Eastern Washington University, posting 19 points 10 rebounds and 3 blocks in the win over Seattle on Saturday, while Majok Majok had 7 points and 11 rebounds in Ball State’s 78-55 loss to Cleveland State.

New Mexico continues to get the results, this time defeating San Diego 73-66, with Cameron Bairstow dropping 16 points and fellow Aussie Hugh Greenwood adding 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
