Aussies Abroad: Ingles in form as Francis fires in Eurocup

Australian Boomers star Joe Ingles and his Maccabi Tel-Aviv are beginning to hit their straps on the domestic and European front, with the former NBL star playing a leading role.

The Israeli team are currently second in the Euroleague group after a narrow 78-76 win over Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade to keep the pressure on top team Lokomotiv Kuban. Ingles had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in 27 minutes in the victory.

The Euroleague triumph came on the back of a hard-fought 83-79 win over Hapoel Eilat in the Israeli Superleague, with Ingles posting 7 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

Lokomotiv Kuban centre and fellow Australian Boomer Aleks Maric had 12 on 4-of-4 shooting and 4 rebounds off the bench as the Russian team improve their Euroleague record to 6-1, defeating Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius 84-53.

Jayco Australian Opals sharp-shooter Belinda Snell had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals as her CCC Polkowice stumbled to another Women’s Euroleague defeat, going down 67-55 to Spartak MR Vidnoje on Thursday.

It was the same result for Marianna Tolo as her Bourges Basket lost 61-56 to Kayseri Kaski Spor, with Tolo posting 6 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.

In Eurocup competition it was Cayla Francis who would enjoy a match-winning performance, helping French club Nantes to a 62-60 win over PEAC-Pecs. Francis had 12 points and 8 rebounds in just 19 minutes on court to help her team improve their record to 3-1 and second in Group F.

The Golden State Warriors have dropped four of their past five NBA outings, but that hasn’t stopped Andrew Bogut from posting strong numbers, including 8 points (4-of-6 FG) and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes as the Warriors slumped to a 103-99 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday.

Fellow Boomer Matthew Dellavedova earned his second NBA career start, but played by 8 minutes in the Cleveland Cavaliers 95-84 loss to the defending champion Miami Heat. Patty Mills continues to put up great numbers, hitting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in the San Antonio Spurs 94-88 defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Despite an amazing 19 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists from Vanessa Panousis, Virginia Tech suffered their first loss of the college basketball season, going down 64-56 at home to Richmond.

Angus Brandt produced his best performance of the college season to date, posting 19 points and 7 rebounds in just 21 minutes as his Oregon State University defeated SIU Edwardsville 101-81 on Wednesday.

Boise State are now 5-0 after another impressive display by Anthony Drmic propelled the team to a 98-89 win over Idaho on Thursday. Drmic posted 21 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals in the victory as fellow Aussies Igor Hadziomerovic (4 points, 3 assists) and Nick Duncan (3 points, 3 rebounds) also contributed to the win.

Ball State big man Majok Majok produced a double-double (12 points and 13 rebounds) for the Cardinals, but it wasn’t enough to stop them from slipping to a 88-69 loss to Utah.

Aussie duo Jackson Aldridge and Dexter Kernich-Drew went head-to-head as the Butler Bulldogs held off a determined Washington State Cougars 76-69 on Friday. Aldridge played 21 minutes in the win, while Kernich-Drew had 7 points and 3 rebounds for the Cougars.
