Aussies Abroad: Phillips wins battle of Opals in Poland

Erin Phillips has emerged victorious in the battle of the Jayco Australian Opals, with her Wisla Krakow extending their unbeaten start to Polish LBK season, defeating Belinda Snell’s CCC Polkowice 70-53.

In the battle of the top two teams in the BLK competition it was Phillips (9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) who would help extend Krakow’s winning streak to 9 games, while Snell had 17 points and 4 rebounds.

Anthony Drmic had a monster start to the college season, dropping a game-high 34 points in Boise State University’s season-opening win over University of Texas, Arlington 116-87.

In his junior year, Drmic shot 5-of-11 from beyond the arc to go with 6 rebounds in the 29-point win, with fellow Australian and World University Games silver medallist Igor Hadziomerovic adding 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Fellow Mountain West Conference star Cameron Bairstow started the season with a memorable performance in the University of New Mexico’s 88-52 win over Alabama A&M. After a summer that saw him rise to the senior ranks of the Australian Boomers program, Bairstow dominated the first game of the season, scoring 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting to go with 11 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Venky Jois looks set to become a star of the Eastern Washington University program, leading the Eagles to a first-up 87-58 win over Pacific Oregon. After claiming Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year honours last campaign, Jois had 22 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks in the first of game of the new season.

University of Louisville freshman Mangok Mathiang enjoyed a productive first game for legendary college coach Rick Pitino, scoring 7 points and grabbing 10 rebounds (7 offensive) in 22 minutes off the bench as the Cardinals recorded a 70-48 victory.

Jackson Aldridge provided offensive punch off the bench for Butler University in the opening Big East game of the season, scoring 9 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the Bulldogs 89-58 victory.

Brock Motum and his Bologna team have moved up to third in the Italian Serie A standings after a 79-71 victory over EA7 Armani. Motum finished with 8 points and 3 rebounds from 30 minutes.

The undefeated start to the Spanish ACB season continues for Brad Newley and his Gran Canaria team, continuing their unbeaten start to the campaign against Estudiantes. Newley had 12 points off the bench in 20 minutes as Gran Canaria claimed a 75-63 victory.

Andrew Bogut had a game-high 13 rebounds and 5 assists as the Golden State Warriors went down on the road to Patty Mills, Aron Baynes and the San Antonio Spurs 76-74 on Saturday.

In 32 minutes on court, Bogut posted his season-high mark for rebounds and assists, while Patty Mills had 6 points in 11 minutes, maintaining his perfect start to the season from three-point range.

Baynes added 5 points and 6 rebounds in 16 minutes as the Spurs recorded their 30th consecutive home win over the Warriors – the longest active winning streak of any team in the NBA.

Mills had another big night on Monday morning (AEDT) as the Spurs crushed the New York Knicks 120-89, posting 15 points in 23 minutes. An expanded role has seen Mills enjoy more minutes (15.6 per game – up from 11.3 last season) and improved production (7.4 points per game – up from 5.1 last season).

In France, Marianna Tolo had 10 points and 3 blocks as her Bourges Basket crushed Union Hainaut 83-39 in French LFB action. Fellow Opal Cayla Francis had 6 points and 3 rebounds in Nantes 80-65 loss to Montpellier.
