Aussies Abroad: Opals star in Poland and NBA returns

Australian Boomers star Patty Mills played a starring role off the bench as the San Antonio Spurs got their 2013/14 NBA season started with a victory, defeating the Memphis Grizzlies 101-94 on Thursday.

Mills was red-hot from beyond the arc, hitting 3-of-3 on his way to 12 points in 17 minutes in the home opener. Fellow Boomers star Aron Baynes made a late appearance off the bench in the seven-point win.

The Golden State Warriors began their season in emphatic fashion, accounting for the Los Angeles Lakers 125-94 on Thursday. Andrew Bogut played 18 minutes, posting 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in the victory.

Belinda Snell and her CCC Polkowice team returned to winning form, thrashing Wilki Morskie 76-52 in Round 7 of the Polish BLK Leauge. The three-time Olympian was back to her best in the win, posting 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc.

Polkowice return to second in the league standings, behind the unbeaten Wisla Krakow who had a remarkable 97-19 win over MKS Konin. Erin Phillips was the inspiration behind the victory, dishing out a game-high 11 assists in just 18 minutes on court.

Australian Boomer Ryan Broekhoff had 8 points and 4 rebounds in 25 minutes for the Besiktas as they recorded their second win of the Eurocup group phase over Bisons Loimaa 61-60 on Thursday morning (AEDT).

Broekhoff’s team are in action in Turkish Basketball League competition on Saturday morning (AEDT), hoping to record their second win of the season and improve their 1-2 record against Karsiyaka.

Ingles and his Maccabi Tel-Aviv continued their struggles in the Israeli League, going down in a nail-biter to Ironi Nes-Ziona 72-71. Ingles was again among the best for his team, posting 12 points, 6 assists, 4 steals and 4 rebounds in 36 minutes.

Another game, another big performance from Daniel Kickert, this time helping his Azovmash to a 69-60 win over Dniproazot in Ukrainian Superleague mid-week action. Kickert had 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with 9 rebounds.
