Aussies Abroad: Jawai hospitalised, Phillips stars

Australian Boomers big man Nathan Jawai is recovering in a Turkish hospital after a scare over the weekend landed the centre in intensive care in an Istanbul hospital.

The former Cairns Taipans star was taken to hospital after complaining of numbness in left arm and leg along with dizziness following a brilliant performance in Galatasaray’s 78-67 Euroleague defeat to Olympiacos on Friday morning (AEDT).

Cleared of any heart issues, Jawai remains in hospital under observation and is said to be in good spirits.

In his absence, Galatasaray suffered their first Turkish Basketball League defeat of the season, going down 77-69 to Aliaga. Fellow Australian Boomer Ryan Broekhoff and his Besiktas team were also on the losing side of the ledger, going down 77-69 to Fenerbahce.

David Barlow’s 8 points and 6 rebounds in 26 minutes could not help Zielona Gora from suffering a crushing Euroleague defeat at the hands of Spanish team Malaga, with the Polish side going down 101-68 on Saturday morning (AEDT).

Another offensive master class from Daniel Kickert has helped Azovmash secure an 80-71 win over BC Kyiv in Ukrainian League action. Kickert had 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field (3-of-3 3FG) to give his their first win of the season.

This form could not be replicated in the VTB League despite 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from Kickert, with Azovmash going down to Russian outfit CSKA 83-69. It was a better result for fellow Australian Aleks Maric, who had started in Lokomotiv Kuban’s 84-73 win over Novgorod.

The bubble burst for Belinda Snell and her CCC Polkowice team, suffering their first defeat of the Polish BLK season, going down 56-47 to Basket ROW. Snell had 9 points on 4-of-15 shooting and 3 steals in the loss.

Erin Phillips marked her return to the Wisla Krakow starting line-up, posting 15 points and 11 rebounds in the 65-51 win over Riviera Gdynia to remain undefeated and leap-frogging Polkowice to top of the BLK standings.

Bourges Basket remains undefeated in French LFB competition, after a 78-62 win over Tarbes with Marianna Tolo posting 8 points and 4 rebounds off the bench.

Fellow Opal Cayla Francis had a game-high 18 points, but it wasn’t enough as her Nantes team went down 66-62 to Arras.

The new NBA season starts this week with all four Australians in action, tipping off on Thursday (AEDT) as Andrew Bogut and his Golden State Warriors welcome the Los Angeles Lakers. Patty Mills, Aron Baynes and their San Antonio Spurs face the Memphis Grizzlies, while Matthew Dellavedova’s Cleveland Cavaliers welcome the Brooklyn Nets.

Catch Mills and Baynes in action as the Spurs face the Lakers on Saturday at 1:30pm (AEDT) on ESPN.
