Rising star Broekhoff signs with Turkish giants

Australian Boomers young gun Ryan Broekhoff is Europe-bound after signing his first professional contract with Turkish giants Besiktas JK Istanbul.

The 22-year-old will join-up with his new teammates next month, but not before suiting up for the Boomers in the 2013 FIBA Oceania Championships.

Broekhoff graduated from Indiana’s Valparaiso University after four seasons, leading the team to the Horizon League Championship and tournament title on the way the NCAA tournament.

An excited Broekhoff said he was looking forward to the next chapter in his fledgling basketball career.

“It’s a little bit of the unknown, but a couple of the guys who have been in camp have played in Turkey and with Besiktas, so I’ve been able to draw from their experiences and find out more and know what to expect,” Broekhoff said.

“I'm really excited about the challenge ahead.”

Speaking from Boomers camp at the Basketball Australia National Centre of Excellence, the Melbourne-native said his time under new Australian Boomers Head Coach Andrej Lemanis at the World University Games (where the Emerging Boomers won the silver medal) and in last year’s series against China has proved beneficial.

“I was lucky enough to get the chance to come into my first camp in Perth last year just before the Olympics and that was the Andrej’s first look at me in a couple of years,” Broekhoff said.

“It was great to be able to build on that and have Andrej at the World University Games to find out his coaching style and what he expects of the players, and he could also see me play first hand under his system.

“We played about 15 games in all (Stankovic Cup and WUG), so hopefully that will help me integrate into the system a little quicker.”

Game One of the 2013 FIBA Oceania Championships saw the Australian Boomers claim a come-from-behind 70-59 victory over New Zealand on Wednesday night.

Game Two will take place on Sunday 18 August at the AIS Arena in Canberra, with the Boomers and Jayco Australian Opals in action.
