Delly a finalist for top college point guard award

Australian Boomers star Matthew Dellavedova continues to his outstanding senior year in college basketball, with the Saint Mary’s College player named among the finalist for the Bob Cousy Award.

This award is given annually to the NCAA’s best point guard in Division I basketball. The award itself is named after Bob Cousy, a Hall of Famer who was a three-time All-American player at the collegiate level and a former point guard for the Boston Celtics.

The reigning West Coast Conference (WCC) Player of the Year has been nominated for the Bob Cousy Award for a second year in a row.

Dellavedova, a native Maryborough, Victoria, has had another outstanding season for the Gaels, leading the team to a 10-1 record in WCC play and a 21-4 overall record at this point in the season.

The Gaels lone loss in conference play came against Gonzaga January 10th and they will look to get their revenge against the Bulldogs on Friday (AEDT), with the game to be telecast LIVE on ESPN at 3:00pm AEDT.

The senior has averaged 15.9 points-per-game and 6.6 assists-per-game thus far this season, while also connecting on 89% of his free throw attempts.

In conference play, Delly is tied for 10th in scoring with 13.9 points-per-game and leads the WCC with 6.6 assists-per-game.  He is also in the top 10 for his conference in free throw percentage, 3-point field goals made, and assist-to-turnover ratio.

In addition to being a finalist for the Cousy award, Dellavedova was given the honour of being an Academic All-District player for Capital One late last month with a 3.4 grade point average majoring in psychology. He was an Academic All-American in 2012.
