A new partnership has been launched in an effort to establish a Brisbane-based team in the National Basketball League in time for the 2013/2014 NBL season.
The partnership between Basketball Queensland, Basketball Australia and a private equity investor, Brisbane Bullets Queensland Pty Ltd, forms the building blocks of a Brisbane Bid Group, with the objective of securing further private equity financial backing, in addition to government and corporate financial and in-kind support.
Former Executive Director of the Queensland Olympic Council, Mr Michael Brierley, has been appointed full-time as the bid group’s Chief Executive Officer, which will see him work with and build relationships with corporate and government interests, as well as basketball associations in the greater Brisbane area.
The appointment of a full-time qualified CEO and the sourcing of initial private capital evidences tangible steps towards an accelerated timeline to launch.
Basketball Queensland Chief Executive Officer Mr Graham Burns said Mr Brierley was an ideal choice for the position.
“Michael has a wealth of experience as the Executive Director of the Queensland Olympic Council, in addition to his corporate and commercial management roles with Yachting Australia and NSW Tennis.
“Michael will be meeting with representatives of the basketball community, state and local governments and media in the near future.
“A Brisbane-based NBL team is of great importance to the league, the sport of basketball, and the South-East Queensland region, and it is our hope that this new strategy will result in an NBL team that Brisbane can call its own, for many years to come,” Mr Burns said.
