The Australian Gliders women’s wheelchair basketball team are on track for success in London after shocking reigning World and Paralympic champions the USA as they prepare for the Paralympic World Cup starting tonight.

Continuing their preparation toward London, the Gliders thrashed the Americans 54-29 at an invitational tournament in Germany, with Cobi Crispin leading the charge.

The reigning Sue Hobbs Medallist (Australian International Women’s Wheelchair Player of the Year), Crispin was dominant and finished with 20 points in the win.

The USA victory was a highlight in an otherwise tough tournament for the Gliders, suffering narrow defeats at the hands of hosts Germany and twice to the Netherlands, including the bronze medal play-off.

Focus now turns to England for the Gliders as they head to Manchester for the Paralympic World Cup, the major lead-up tournament to the Paralympics.

The Gliders will again face the USA in the group stages of the event, but not before opening their campaign against Germany tonight and taking on host nation Great Britain.

The 2012 London Paralympics run from 29 August to 9 September.
