Australian Boomers European-based star Aleks Maric is apparently safe despite an attack on the bus his Greek team was travelling in that forced two of his teammates to hospital in Athens today.
Maric was travelling with his Panathinaikos club to a Greek playoff game against rivals Olympiakos when hooligans threw rocks at the team bus, breaking windows and injuring two players.
Stratos Perperoglou and American import Steven Smith were both taken to hospital after the attack, where they were treated for cuts from broken glass.
The opening game of the best-of-five series between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos was subsequently postponed by Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports George Nikitiadis.
Maric posted a series of photos of the rocks thrown and the damaged windows on his bus on his Twitter account (@maric_aleks) after the incident.
Basketball Australia officials are currently seeking to make contact with Maric to ensure his welfare.
Maric recently led Panathinaikos to the Euroleague Final Four and is expected to join the Boomers after the Greek Finals series as the Australian team prepares for London.
A critical part of that preparation will be The Farewell Series, which will see the Boomers take on Greece in a three-game series in Victoria in June. The series will commence with a double-header with the Jayco Australian Opals at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena on 24 June.
