The Jayco Opals will face Brazil, host nation Great Britain, joint world number two Russia and Qualifiers 3 and 5 in the first round of the tournament.
Meanwhile the Australian Boomers have pooled with the world number two Spain, along with Brazil, host nation Great Britain, China and Qualifier 3.
Two groups of six teams in both the men’s and women’s competitions were announced, with the Aussies both avoiding match-ups with reigning Gold Medalists USA in the preliminary round of the competition.
"For every major Championship, the draw is a major milestone. Players begin picturing themselves on the court and thinking about match-ups. Fans start imagining the atmosphere,” said FIBA Secretary General and IOC Member Patrick Baumann.
"The 2008 Men's Final between the USA and Spain was one of the greatest Olympic moments. It showed the huge strides international basketball had made in becoming more and more competitive. I expect this year's Olympic Basketball Tournaments will be a great and memorable spectacle for all," he said.
Three qualifiers for the men’s competition and five qualifiers for the women’s tournament are yet to be determined, and won’t be known until the conclusion of the 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament, a second-chance event held for nations who weren’t successful in gaining direct entry to London via their individual zone championships.
The women’s competition is scheduled to be held 25 June – 1 July in Ankara, Turkey, while the men’s tournament will be held 2 – 8 July in Caracus, Venezuela.
Both the Boomers and Jayco Opals will play in the three-game Farewell Series: Basketball's Road to London which tips off on June 24 in an exciting double-header at Hisense Arena in Melbourne. The Jayco Opals will face Brazil, who they will meet in the first round of the tournament in London, while the Boomers will face Greece in their three-game series.
