The Australian U19 Men’s Team (Emus) have been defeated by Germany in Mannheim 68 – 67 in the first of their preparation games before the start of the Albert Schweitzer Tournament. The game being played at the MWS Halle am Herzogenreid.

Joel Spear was the leading scorer for the Emus with 16 points followed by Michael Rowley with 12 points , Greg Page and Dane Pineau both with 9 points.

Germany got off to a fast start with an 8 – 0 run. The Emus then countering with a 6 – 0 run. However, the fast paced attack of the Germans saw them lead by 10 point at the first break.

The home team took control of the game during the second quarter and had a commanding lead at the half time break 43 – 28.

Better execution in their half court offence combined with increased ball pressure had the Emus outscoring the Germans in the third quarter.

The Emus settled into the 4th quarter with their traits of full court ball pressure and relentless persistence, suffocating the German offence. The Emus closing the gap with several quick transition baskets. An Emmett Naar 3 with 3 seconds left on the game clock got the Emus to within 1 point. However, time was on the German’s side and they were able to secure a 1 point win despite the Aussies scoring 20 – 7 in the final quarter.

Head Coach Damian Cotter commented that "this was a typical first game of a tour. We were a little sluggish in the first half but it was very pleasing how the team adjusted and put themselves back in the contest. International game tempo was very new to most of these players. We now look forward to the next game."

The Emus next preparation game will be against USC Heidelberg.
