Survey: the impact of alcohol sponsorship in sport

Researchers from the University of Queensland are undertaking a range of studies examining the impact of alcohol sponsorship in sport upon sportspeople’s and young consumers’ consumption. This is independent research, funded by the Australian Research Council and The Australian Sports Commission. The research outcomes will help inform the debate on whether alcohol sponsorship should be banned or regulated in Australian Sports.

The researchers are currently seeking sportspeople at professional and club amateur levels from across Australia, who participate in popular sports including baseball, basketball, netball, rugby union, AFL, rugby league, lawn bowls, cricket, surfing and golf, and aged over 18 years. The survey is conducted online and takes around 10 minutes to complete. Participation is completely confidential and anonymous. The researchers are offering an incentive of an opt-in prize draw of an Apple iPad. Their aim is to collect a national sample (regional and metro clubs) of at least 1000 sportspeople.

The aim of the study is to empirically test the alleged association between sponsorship and consumption, attitudes and accessibility among sportspeople. The researchers are wanting to capture the more subtle forms of sponsorship typically found at the club level, in addition to the obvious forms, such as cash.
