Vanessa Devlin a referee on the rise

Rising Australian Basketball official Vanessa Devlin has been awarded the Australian Sports Commission’s 2011 National Officiating Scholarship Program, and has been riding the wave of success since being awarded the scholarship.

Vanessa has been officiating in the CABL competition in South Australia and was recently awarded the Women’s Gold Medal game. She was recently called up to represent Australia at the 3rd INAS Global Games in Liguria, Italy, an invitation to accepted and an opportunity she grasped with both hands.

Vanessa was the only female Basketball referee at the tournament and was so impressive, she was awarded the Gold Medal Game.

In the midst of a great deal of success already, Vanessa was given an additional boost, when she was promoted to the WNBL referee panel this year – she officiated her first WNBL game in Adelaide the day after she returned from Italy.

In only her second WNBL game, the entire country was able to see her in action, officiating a TV game which saw the nerves of her previous great achievements rise again.

The scholarship program requires Vanessa to have a mentor for the duration and she has been well guided by officiating legend, Carolyn Tsakalos. Carolyn is a retired FIBA referee who has officiated at many World Championships, the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, including a semi-final, and the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. And she takes on a young referee following in her footsteps.

Already a Basketball Australia National Female Referee of the year, which she achieved in 2005 & 2009, what future accolades await this young officiating talent? There are likely to be many more, with Vanessa Devlin firming herself as a basketball official to look out for.
