Aussies thrilled to meet the Queen in Canberra

Jayco Australian Opals rising star Liz Cambage is set to meet Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II at a reception held at Parliament House in Canberra tonight, after receiving an invitation from the office of the Prime Minister, the Hon. Ms Julia Gillard earlier this week.

Also receiving an invitation was wheelchair basketball champion and member of the Gliders national basketball team Kylie Gauci.

For Cambage who has risen to stardom as a young professional Aussie basketballer in the WNBL and WNBA over the past two years, the invitation is the ultimate recognition for her achievements.

Liz, who was preparing for training when the invitation arrived in the mail, said it was her Mum who called to let her know the exciting news.

“She’s said ‘Liz, oh my God, you have a letter here from the Prime Minister’s office’. I said ‘My God, I’m being kicked out of the country,” she laughed. “Open it and see what it is,” an excited Cambage instructed her Mum.

Liz’s Mum opened the letter and was quick to report that Liz had been invited to meet the Queen at a ceremony in the nation’s capital.

“It’s just so random,” she said. “Me, out of everyone in the world – silly Liz being on her best behaviour to meet the Queen tonight,” she said. “It’s just amazing.”

When asked about how she plans to greet Her Majesty, Liz said: “I’m going to do a little curtsey-slash-bow-slash-look cute while I’m doing it,” she said. “It’s such a huge honour and I can’t wait.”

Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip are in Australia as part of an 11 day Royal Tour, which concludes at the end of the month.
