Pearls and Boomerangs progress at Global Games

The Australian Pearls remain undefeated in the Global Games being played in Liguria, Italy after three days of competition.

The reigning World Champion Pearls defeated Japan 63 – 53 in the opening game of the Games. The Pearls started slowly but were able to counter the physical defence from Japan with Lisa Mackie scoring 18 points and well supported by Kaitlyn Papworth with 12 points and Eliza Mills 10.

In the 2nd game of the competition the Pearls had watched Brazil play Japan on their rest day and were able to convincingly defeat Brazil 55 – 35. The Pearls got off to a great start to a much improved Brazil with Kaitlyn Papworth scoring a quick 6 points in the opening three minutes of the game.

Lisa Mackie shut down Brazil’s key player restricting her to only 3 points in the game. The girls managed the physicality of the game well and will be ready to face Japan again later today. In a game where every player contributed to the win Lisa Mackie once again led the scoring with 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Eliza Mills had 12 points and 9 rebounds.

The Boomerangs, playing in their first international in two years, met one of the world’s best teams when they matched up against Portugal in their opening game.  The Boomerangs worked hard for the full 40 minutes and were able to get back to within 10 points in the 3rd quarter.  However in the end the experience of the team from Portugal was enough to give them a 64 – 42 win against the Aussies.

In a must win for the Boomerangs they made certain from the opening minute of the game that the result was going their way. France did not give up easily and using their speed came within 6 points in the final five minutes. However the Boomerangs maintained their composure and fought off this late charge to secure their spot in the play offs with a well earned 73 – 63 win over France.

They have now qualified for the semi finals which will commence on Saturday 1 October.
