Netherlands bounce back to beat South Africa

The Netherlands have rebounded from yesterday’s three point loss to the Australian Rollers in the Tri Series Tournament by accounting for South Africa 88-47, this afternoon at the AIS Training Hall in Canberra.

Similar to their early game against the Rollers today, South Africa were able to stay close to their opposition in the first term. Scores were tied at 14 apiece before a Netherlands rally saw them take a 22-15 lead at quarter time.

But in the second quarter the Netherlands dominated the scoreboard, opening up a 30 point halftime lead with a 28-5 point quarter, led by Netherlands player Robin Poggenwisch who registered 14 first half points.

Both teams traded baskets for much of the third term, with the Netherlands unable to extend their lead, while South Africa could not get the deficit below the 30 point mark.

Late in the quarter the Netherlands were able to slightly increase their halftime lead, but South Africa still registered their highest scoring quarter of the game, before a fourth quarter let down saw Netherlands finish more strongly.

After his explosive first half Robin Poggenwisch finished as the game high scorer with 18 points, while Koen Jansens added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Luvuyo Mbanda led the South Africans in scoring with 11 points and 9 rebounds, while Richard Nortje added 9 points.
