The Emus have also announced their Captain and Vice Captain for these games and the World Championships, the honour going to Hugh Greenwood and Mitch Creek respectively.
The Emus first game in Lithuania was against Brazil, runners up in the Americas Qualifications. The Australians ran out comfortable winners in the end 88–64, on the back of a scorching 3 point shooting percentage (71 per cent).
Hugh Greenwood and Anthony Drmic top scored for the Emus with 12 points apiece. Also in double figures were Mitch Creek, Lewis Thomas, Daniel Trist with 11 points each and Jackson Hussey with 10.
As a result of good transition offense and pressure defense in the first two quarters the Emus had grafted a sixteen point half time lead, 48–32.
The Emus upped the tempo early in the second half and were able to extend the lead to 20 points after three minutes. Brazil tried to counter by shifting to a zone defense. The Emus adapted to the change in defence maintaining their firm grip on the game.
The final quarter provided the Emus Coaches an opportunity to fine tune a number of the team’s offensive and defensive structures and saw the Emus consolidated to finish the game 24 points in front of their opponents.
The victory was soured by a last quarter serious foot injury to point guard Mitchell Norton.
Head Coach Damian Cotter was very pleased with the way the Emus executed their game plan against Brazil. ‘It was good to be able to give all players an opportunity to be involved in the game at this stage of our preparation’ said Cotter.
The Emus next game in the Global Games will be against the hosts, Lithuania.
