Emus depart for European tour

The Australian Emus U19 Mens’s Basketball team has departed for Europe where they will spend the next two weeks training as well as playing in a series of matches, in preparation for the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship of Basketball, in Latvia in a month’s time.

During the next two weeks, the Emus will face off against powerhouse nations Croatia and Russia, where they will play three games against both countries.

The Croatian match-ups will take place in Crikvenica, Croatia over three straight days – 29, 30 and 31 May – while the Russian series will take place in Moscow, Russia, also over three consecutive days – 3, 4 and 5 June.

The team was also take part in an intensive training program, which will see them work out as many as two times a day on non-game days, as well as morning sessions on the day the team plays.

The Emus line-up, which is headlined by rising stars Hugh Greenwood and Mitch Creek, are expected to perform well at this year’s World Championship, and these matches will serve as a key preparation.

"I'm looking forward to getting the kids on the court and getting some game experience: that's the number one,” said Emus head coach Damien Cotter.
“The goal that we want to get out of the first leg, with Croatia, is to refine our structure both offensively and defensively in our preparations for the World Championship," he said.

The team will arrive home on 7 June, with the final team set to represent Australia at the upcoming FIBA U19 World Championship, is expected to be announced soon after.
