Basketball excels at NSW Sports Federation Annual Sports Awards

Lauren Jackson has been awarded the NSW Team Athlete of the Year at the 2010 NSW Sports Federation Annual Sports Awards on Wednesday night from Homebush.

Jackson, who was present with her parents on the night to accept her award, beat out cricketer Alex Blackwell, Sydney Roosters Rugby League player Todd Carney, Surf Life Saving competitor Naomi Flood and Nicky Souter from Sailing.

Lauren was a popular winner and welcomed the opportunity to provide autographs and spent a lot of time chatting with the other attendees on the night.

Also taking home an award on the night for the NSW Team with a Disability Award was the Sydney University Flames Wheelchair basketball team, graciously accepted by competitors Sarah Stewart and Katie Hill from the Australian Gliders.

Sharing the NSW Young Official of the Year was Rebecca Keirs – Rebecca had an outstanding season as a referee with highlights officiating the gold medal game at the Australian U16 Championships, Junior Basketball classic in Melbourne in June and the NSW Youth League Men’s grand final.

One of the highlights of the night was the awarding of Ken Harvey with the Distinguished Long-service Award. Harvey has been involved in the sport since 1944, and at 82 years young, continues to referee with the City of Sydney Association and the Sydney YMCA.
