Gliders lure Germany for World Challenge

Australia’s Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team, the Gliders, will host wheelchair basketball powerhouse Germany in a ‘Gliders World Challenge’ in June as they prepare for the world titles in July.

The Gliders will play three games at Dandenong Basketball Stadium from June 7-9 before tying in with the Opals World Challenge for two blockbuster double-headers in Geelong on June 10 and back in Dandenong on June 11.

The Gliders most recently played Germany at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing when Germany eclipsed the Gliders 64-56; Germany went on to win the silver medal, the Gliders bronze.

After claiming the Osaka Cup in February, the Gliders will be one of the teams to beat at the 2010 IWBF World Championship in Birmingham, England from July 7-17 and the ‘friendly’ games against Germany will provide the perfect preparation.

Gliders Head Coach John Triscari said the World Challenge was a terrific opportunity to test the Gliders against one of the world’s best teams ahead of the world titles.

“It’s important for us in that we will get a good look at what Germany is like, and what improvement they’ve had because they are the number two team in the world,” Triscari said.

“The next aspect to it for us is that in our build up we would like to let them know that we’ve undergone improvement as well.”

Triscari will use the tournament to assist in selecting the final 12-player team for the World Championship.

“We’ve got 14 players in our squad at the moment and the World Challenge will give us a good chance to have a look at two of the players that are not in the 12 that we are taking to the World Cup in Manchester next week and to see what improvements they’ve made and whether they’re worthy of being in the World Championship team.”

Gliders games from June 7-9 are free to attend but fans will need to purchase tickets for the Gliders-Opals double-headers in Geelong on June 10 and Dandenong on June 11 when the Gliders games will tip off at 6.00pm ahead of the Opals v Japan from 8.00pm.
