2009 FIBA Oceania Championship winners Sam Richards and Hollie Grima returned to Europe after helping the Jayco Opals qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
Playing for Polish side KSSSe AZS-PWSZ Gorzow, Richards top-scored with 25 points to lead her team past ZVVZ USK Prague on Wednesday night (local time). The 168cm guard added four assists and two steals in an 87-72 win.
Richards made 10 of 15 shots from the floor and was a perfect three of three from the free-throw line.
"Five weeks ago Prague showed us what it means to play in Euroleague,” Richards said.
“We won today. I am proud. We will not celebrate too long, because on Saturday we have a hard game in the Polish league."
Grima hit the hardwood for Czech Republic team Frisco Sika Brno to post seven points, five rebounds and an assist as they topped Tarbes GB 83-68 in Group D of Euroleague.
2006 World Championship MVP Penny Taylor has been leading Turkish-based Fenerbahce SK but the team fell to Euroleague champion Spartak Moscow on Wednesday night 103-59. Taylor scored 11 points to go with four rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Joining Grima and Taylor in Group D is Erin Phillips who signed with Poland’s Lotos Gydnia in the offseason.
The point guard leads her team in assists (3.0 per game) and steals (1.4) and will line up against Szeviep tonight (local time).
Rounding out the Euroleague wrap, Olympian Belinda Snell joined Spanish club Ros Casares Valencia following a WNBA season with the San Antonio Silver Stars.
Snell’s team was knocked from the top of Group A after falling to UMMC Ekaterinburg 82-70 on Wednesday. Snell shot 100 per cent from the field, including three baskets from 3-point range to go for 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
