Cambage lifts Gems over Brazil

Elizabeth Cambage bagged 20 points to lead Australia’s U19 Women’s team, the Gems, into the Quarter Finals, downing Brazil 72-51 at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women in Bangkok, Thailand tonight.

The tournament’s leading scorer drained eight of 11 attempts from the field with support from Bree Farley who added 10 points. Gretel Tippett tallied eight points and eight rebounds and Rachel Jarry added eight points and six rebounds.

The Gems’ defence and team play gave them the edge; taking 24 defensive rebounds to just 13 from the South Americans and 11 assists to four.

The Gems will fight to keep their winning streak alive on Friday at 4.00pm AEST when they take on Canada for a Semi Finals berth.

It was an inauspicious for the Australians as Brazil went on a 6-0 run to lead by five late in the first quarter but the Gems hit back with three unanswered treys and were soon up by seven points, hammering the Brazilians on the boards 12-4 for the term.

The Gems took a 22-15 advantage into the second quarter and 203cm Cambage muscled her way to the basket for eight points in the term while the Brazilians managed to get into the paint but could not make it count.

Australia led 43-27 but it was a stalemate in the first three minutes of the third quarter until Queensland’s Tippett went to work in the post.

The Brazilians could not buy a basket but Tippett’s three point play opened the flood gates for the Gems and they poured on 17 points while clamping down on Brazil to lead by 29 points at the last break, 60-31.

The teams went goal for goal in the fourth quarter but some late shots from Brazil reduced the final margin to 21 points.

In earlier games France conquered the Czech Republic 73-58, USA demolished Japan 109-68, Argentina scraped past Lithuania 61-57, Canada finished off China 75-67 and Spain remain undefeated after a 70-54 victory over Russia.

The Gems Quarter Final match against Canada will take the court at 4.00pm Friday AEST. Follow the Gems World Championship campaign with LIVE STATS.
