Beker takes the gold

While the Australian Emus did not make it to the Gold medal game at the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship for Men, there was one Australian on the floor during the decider, referee Scott Beker.

Beker was nominted to referee the game after strong performances during the tournament, earning just his second international gold medal match.

One of his tournament highlights, besides the gold medal appointment was the Preliminary Round game between Greece and Lithuania, an exciting clash, that Lithuania eventually won by 15 points.

Beker was named the Basketball Australia Junior referee of the year in 1998 and 1999 and has since gone from strength to strength, refereeing at a number of international fixtures.

He obtained his FIBA Licence in 2005 and since that time his biggest appointments to date include the 2006 Under-18 European Junior Championships, followed by the 2007 Under-19 World Championship for Women and the Chinese national league (CBA) Semi Finals.

His first international gold medal game appointment was at the 2008 William Jones Tournament in Taipei.
