The Perth Western Stars did not disappoint the local crowd as they overwhelmed the competition to be undefeated in the opening round of the 2009 Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League in Perth on the weekend.

The Perth Western Stars did not disappoint the local crowd as they took the opening fixture of the 2009 Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League in Perth on Friday night.

The Western Stars defeated the Dandenong Rangers 65-28 at the Herb Graham Rec Centre. After a tight first quarter with only two points separating the teams, a 24-6 second term set up the 37-point victory.

Australian Glider Cobi Crispin led all scorers with 21 points and added 11 rebounds and eight assists. She was supported by Gliders teammate Amber Merritt who posted 18 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Also on Friday night the Hills Hornets overwhelmed the Goudkamp Gladiators 80-25.

On Saturday the Rangers recovered to post their first win, 49-21 over the Gladiators as the Western Stars and Hills Hornets put on a show in the match of the weekend, the Western Stars were triumphant with a one-point victory 46-45.

The Western Stars had started the game in commanding fashion, leading 17-7 at the first break but the Hornets fought back in the second and third quarters, out-scoring the Western Stars 26-14 to lead by two points, 33-31, heading into the final term. The Hornets accuracy let them down in the last quarter, converting just 5-of-17 attempts from the field at 29%, while the Western Stars put up 7-of-14 at 50%.

Gliders Sarah Stewart and Liesl Tesch led the Hornets with 16 and nine points apiece but 20 points from Cobi Crispin and 13 for Amber Merritt for the Western Stars handed them the one-point win.

The Western Stars were on a roll and bounced the Gladiators 81-31 before the Hills Hornets took the honours over the Rangers, 63-39.

On Sunday, the Hills Hornets started the day the same way they finished Saturday as they trounced the Gladiators, 73-38.

The host team finished the round with their fourth victory of the weekend, defeating the Rangers 54-23.

Round 2 of the WNWBL will be hosted by Dandenong from 12-14 June.
