Vale Tony Andrikonis

It is with sincere regret and sadness that we announce the passing after a long illness, of Basketball Tasmania Life Member and Past-President Tony Andrikonis.

Tony passed away peacefully on Saturday 25th April in the presence of his loving family, wife Margaret, son Craig and daughter Karen after a battle with cancer.

As a player, Tony represented Tasmania at four Australian Men's Championships between 1960 and 1963 while he was based in Burnie with the National Fitness Association.

While based in Burnie, Tony played a big part in the formation of the Burnie Amateur Basketball Association and on moving to Hobart in 1964, played a similar role in the establishment of the Business Houses Basketball Association.

At various times during the 1960's and 1970's, he was Head Coach or Manager of a number of Tasmanian junior and senior teams at Australian Championships.

During the 1970's and 1980's Tony became a valued member of the State Executive Council and of the Men's Council and in 1983, in recognition of his service to the sport, he became Basketball Tasmania's fifth Life Member.

In 1991, Tony came out of "retirement" to serve a one year term as President of Basketball Tasmania during which he played a significant part  in steering the organization towards a major governance restructure which was finalized in 1993.

The Tasmanian basketball community is indebted to Tony for his contribution and we offer our sincere condolences to Margaret, Craig and Karen and their families.

Tasmanian basketball is very much the richer for Tony's involvement.
