Opals & Boomers path to World Champs confirmed

Australia’s senior national basketball teams have a chance to clinch world championship berths with the schedule of the 2009 FIBA Oceania Championships confirmed yesterday.

The Opals must beat the world number 16, New Zealand Tall Ferns, in a two game series in September to qualify for the world championships and the opportunity to defend their world title in the Czech Republic next year.

The Oceania zone has two berths for the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Men in Turkey, so having already both qualified, the Boomers will play world number 14, New Zealand’s men’s team, the Tall Blacks, for seedings in August.

The nation’s capital, Canberra, will host the first leg of the women’s series while game two of the men’s series will be played in NZ’s capital, Wellington.

The Opals squad for the 2009 program will be announced on Friday ahead of a camp in early April.
