Basketball Australia would like to extend its sincere condolences to the family and friends of SEABL Chairman Hugh McMenamin, who passed away on Tuesday.

McMenamin, 61, was a giant in basketball circles whose passion for and commitment to basketball will forever be missed.

He was a father figure of Kilsyth Basketball involved at all levels. From his work as the coach of his daughter’s Maroondah Magic Basketball Club under-10s team and then administrator with the Kilsyth Cobras Representative teams (1993-1996), he was elected Vice President of the Kilsyth & Mountain District Basketball Association (K&MDBA) in April 1996.

McMenamin was the Kilsyth Cobras delegate with the South East Australia Basketball League (SEABL) from 1996 until 2001 when he became a SEABL Board member and then SEABL Chairman, a position he held  until his passing.

He served on various Boards, Committees and Forums with Basketball Victoria and Basketball Australia and has been employed by the facility management and development arm of Basketball Victoria (Basketball Stadiums Victoria Ltd) since 2002.

In February 2006 he was elected as a Board member of Eastern Sports Development Ltd.

He was also a proud volunteer at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

“Hugh was a passionate and enthusiastic contributor to basketball over many, many years on several levels,” Basketball Australia Chief executive Scott Derwin said.

“He will be very much missed by his many friends in the sport and the sport is certainly the poorer for his passing.

“We extend to Jan and the family our deep condolences and offer our sincere support”

Our thoughts go out to his wife Jan, his children Claire, Alison and Erica, his son-in-law Jason and his grandson Patrick.

A 'Celebration of the Life of Hugh McMenamin' will take place at Kilsyth Basketball Stadium (Liverpool Road, Kilsyth) on Wednesday 23 April 2008 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. All are welcome.
