World champion defencejobs Opal Emma Randall has signed with Italian club side Mercede Alghero and will depart Australia later this week to suit up in the premiere Italian women’s basketball league, Serie A1.

Randall will stay with the Division 1 team, based on the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea, until the end of the season in mid May.

Alghero’s administrators hope that the former Dandenong Rangers star can help the team improve on their 2-and-13 record and avoid relegation to a lower division.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Randall told BA Media. “It’s a great opportunity and I hope that I can help the team out.”

The 190cm centre won’t be short of Aussie company while in Italy, with four of her gold-medal winning teammates from the 2006 FIBA World Championship playing in the league – Penny Taylor (Schio), Jenni Screen (Parma), Laura Summerton (Taranto) and Belinda Snell (La Spezia).

“Playing against other Aussies will be a lot of fun,” Randall said. “But it will be a major challenge. They’re all playing very well.”

Randall will replace ex-Oakland University Grizzlies forward Petra Namacova.

Good luck Emma!
